Αγία Σοφία η προστάτιδα των ορφανών - St. Sophia the Mother of Orphans (Sophia of Ainos)

 22x15cm
Egg tempera

Gold leaf 22k on background

2023.

Commemoration day:  4 June

Our venerable Mother Sophia was born in the province of Ainos

in southeastern Thrace , and was the daughter of pious Christian parents.

When she was of age, her parents arranged for her to be married.

She and her husband had six children. Though she was occupied with worldly

cares and responsibilities, she still kept the commandments of God and lived a virtuous life.

She loved to attend the Church services, and so she progressed in virtue.

After sickness carried off Sophia's husband and all her children in succession,

she did not despair, but became even more devoted to God. Within a period of twenty years,

she adopted one hundred children, and raised them to love God. Because of this,

she is sometimes called Saint Sophia the Mother of Orphans.

She sold her property and gave the proceeds to the poor and to widows.

She led an austere life, eating nothing but bread and water.

She preferred to do without the necessities of life herself rather than

allow any poor person to leave her home empty-handed.

The Psalms of the Prophet-King David were always on her lips, and tears flowed

continuously from her eyes.

Because of her humility and her love for the poor, God blessed her in the following way.

In her home there was a container of wine which she reserved for the poor.

She noticed that no matter how much she took from the container, it remained full.

However, as soon as she told someone about the miracle and glorified God, the container

became empty. Saint Sophia became sorrowful, believing that the wine had failed

because of her unworthiness. Therefore, she increased her ascetical labors until her health

 suffered.

Sensing that the end of her life was near, she received the monastic tonsure.

From that time, she devoted herself completely to the worship of God.

Saint Sophia reposed peacefully at the age of fifty-three. It is not known when she lived.

She died 53 years old.

Troparion — Tone 8

By a flood of tears you made the desert fertile, /

and your longing for God brought forth fruits in abundance. /

By the radiance of miracles you illumined the whole universe! /

O our holy mother Sophia, pray to Christ our God to save our souls!

Άγιος Ιωάννης ο Πρόδρομος - Saint John the Forerunner

 27x35cm  -  10.6x13.7inch.

Egg tempera

2021.

As well as “the Baptist”, John is also known as “glorious prophet and forerunner of Christ”. Therefore, the presence of the wings is to symbolize John’s status as a divine messenger (in Greek “Evangelos”, from where the word “Angel” is derived). It’s worth noting that the wings of the archangels (Gabriel, Michael etc.) in icons are largely symbolic too, as they are not specifically described as having wings in the Scriptures.

But if that were all, then why aren’t the prophets of the Old Testament, or the Apostles, shown with the angelic wings of divine messenger? The answer, in the words of Jesus Christ Himself, is because “among those born of women there is no one greater than John;” moreover, he is “the culmination and the crown of the prophets”, as the hymn from the feast of John’s nativity proclaims. Therefore, St John is an especial example among the Saints of an earthly “angel” and a heavenly man. As such, he is also described as the “Angel of the Desert” in the inscriptions of icons.

The life John led in the desert was angelic for two reasons. On the one hand he proclaimed the coming of the Messiah, Jesus Christ, becoming a herald of God like the angels. On the other, he lived a life of chastity, abstinence, and prayer, not being mindful of material needs, but with his attention fixed firmly to heaven. This is the life of the angels, and why the monastic way of life is sometimes called “angelic”, as well as why St John is the patron of monastics, hermits, and ascetics. For both reasons, it is appropriate to show St John with the spiritual wings of a dove.

She that once was barren now brings forth Christ’s Forerunner, John, the culmination and the crown of all the Prophets. For when he, in River Jordan, laid his hand on Him Whom the Prophets preached aforetime, he was revealed as God the Word’s fore-chosen Prophet, His mighty preacher, and His Forerunner in grace.
(Kontakion from the Feast of the Nativity of John the Baptist)

APOLYTIKION FOR ST. JOHN THE BAPTIST 7th January Tone 2

The memory of the just is praised,* but thou art well pleased, O Forerunner, with the testimony of the Lord. * For thou hast verily been shown forth as more honoured than the prophets, * since thou wast counted worthy to baptize in the stream Him whom they foretold. * Therefore, having mightily contended and suffered for the truth, * with joy thou hast preached also to those in Hades, * of God's manifestation in the flesh, * who takes away the sin of the world * and grants unto us great mercy.

30x 40 cm - 11.8 x 15.7inch.
Handmade linden wood curved.
Egg tempera and gold leaf 22k.

+ St. Peter.

A visiting dignitary is honoured with a symbolic key to the city as a token of respect, but for eternity the keys to the kingdom of Heaven have been placed by the Messiah himself, out of respect to one of his greatest disciples, into the hand of a man called Peter, the constant companion and beloved friend of Jesus Christ. This magnificent disciple, whom trust places at the gates of heaven to examine the credentials of those who would enter, had a master key in his lifetime which unlocked the hearts of men to admit the Saviour, and his wisdom was the key to men's minds which in turn admitted the intelligence to give meaning to the Christian faith.
Brought to Jesus by his brother Andrew, a fisherman like himself, Peter forthwith acknowledged the Master and undertook a lifetime of casting his fisherman's nets for the sake of Jesus Christ and so excelled himself in his personal and total dedication to the Saviour that in the two thousand years that have elapsed any roll call of the disciples finds the name of Peter among the most prominent. He ranks with St. Paul as one without whom the new Faith could not have survived the whips and scorns of the pagan era of superstition and spiritual darkness.
Several accounts are given in the New Testament about St, Peter and his strong bond with the Nazarene, but the stirring passage in Matthew should be etched in the mind of every Christian, that which says "And I say to thee that thou art Peter and upon this rock I will build my Church, and the gates of hell will not prevail against it. I will give thee the keys of the Kingdom of the Heavens, and whatsoever thou shalt bind on earth shall be bound in the heavens, and whatsoever thou shalt loose on earth shall be loosed in the heavens." This divine authority vested in Peter as well as to all of the disciples of Christ, placed a sacred trust in Peter, whose name means, "rock" from the Greek word petra.
It was upon this rock of faith, as depicted in holy Scripture, that the formation of the Christian Church, the disciples' handywork, was not only a success but a triumph as well. Peter, the redoubtable fisherman who had never strayed far from his home in Capernaum on the shores of Galilee, was at the side of Jesus in his ministry throughout the Holy Land and as one of his closest apostles planned the campaigns for the winning of converts.
In the course of this spiritual campaign, he came to witness the many miracles of the Master, such as the walking on water, the miracle of the loaves and fishes and, many others which were to lend an aura of divine authority to all of the apostles in the stewardship of the Church.
Peter, together with many others, was privileged to witness the glorious resurrection of Christ, an event which all Christendom views with such reverence as to regard the first followers of Christ, as next to divine.
Peter struck out on his own in the missionary work of renewed dedication after the death of Jesus, but he favoured Jerusalem and together with other followers of Christ assisted diligently in the formation of the Christian community in Jerusalem.
Peter, whose presence at Gethsemane had further fuelled the fires of Christian zeal in his heart, joined John in Samaria, Lydda, Joppa, and Caesaria in a propagation of the truth of the Messiah, but returning to Jerusalem found that a famine had set in and that the Christian community was somehow being blamed for the economic woes that ravaged the land. With the help of Paul and Barnabas they restored thconfidence of the people and led them out of their hapless state to an era of new prosperity. Ultimately Peter established the first church in the ancient city of Antioch and became its first bishop. Later in Rome, he was sentenced by Nero to be crucified, a manner of death in which he emulated the Messiah.

Saint Paul.

Whenever the storms of controversy within the Christian Church have cast a shadow on the Cross of Jesus Christ, the clouds have been rolled back by the spiritual brighteness, undiminished by the centuries, of the magnificent St. Paul. Most Christians agree that were it not for St. Paul, the new faith of Jesus Christ would have never taken hold to become the mainstay of Western civilization, The total commitment of St. Paul to the Messiah, for which he ultimately sacrificed his life, brought the message of Jesus to the nucleus of Christians over a period of thirty years and assured the permanency of the truth of the Savior. It was Christ, of course, who planted the seeds, but it was St. Paul who nourished the garden of Christendom.
St. Paul was born in Tarsus, a flourishing crossroads city in Cilicia, Asia Minor. He received his religious training in Jerusalem under the renowned rabbinical tutor Gamaliel, from whom he absorbed the teaching of the Pharisees with intensity and sincerity. He deplored the acceptance of the Messiah as heresy to his religion and as an affront to the Law of the ancient covenant. Armed with articles of condemnation from his council, he set out for Damascus with an avowed purpose of wiping out this new belief in Jesus Christ.
On the road to Damascus he met Jesus. This is perhaps the most dramatic turnabout in history, one that was destined to alter the course of the world. St. Paul embraced as the Messiah the man whom he had set out to destroy; thereafter he devoted himself with deep conviction to the truth of Christianity. The conversion alone of this profoundly religious man is in itself testimony to the reality of the Messiah's divinity.
Although not one of the twelve disciples of Christ, Paul linked himself with the apostles and became the greatest apostolic missionary of all time. A brilliant orator and writer, he was sensitive to the needs and moods of the various tribes of both Greek and Near Eastern backgrounds. Furthermore, he was intelligent enough to cope with the problems that beset the new faith at every turn.
St. Paul, a man of small physical stature, cast a giant shadow upon the missionary scene as he traveled the length and breadth of the ancient Eastern world. He had success following success in the vast areas of Asia, Greece, Cyprus, Macedonia, and eventually Rome, where his most noble purpose was to prove his undoing. He had a fondness for Jerusalem, for whose poor he continually solicited funds. Moreover, he envisioned a union of the Jewish and Christian communities, a project which was to prove dangerous. He met James in Jerusalem and together they sought a means to bring this laudable plan into being. However, he encountered not love but outright hostility. In fact, he had to be saved from an angry mob by the Roman authorities, who placed him aboard a ship bound for Rome, where he arrived after a tossed voyage.
St. Paul had always wanted to use the eternal city with its strategic position in the empire, from which the spread of Christianity could be projected. Although he preached in Rome for two years, his ambitions were never completely realized, except for the production of his masterful Pastoral Letters.
Despite his frail health he continued his work for Christ at an accelerated pace, but his enthusiastic love for the Savior also brought him the resentment of certain influential elements in Rome. When his enemies had done their worst, he was brought to trial and met a marytr's death about A.D. 67.
The true greatness of Paul is discerned in his writings, particularly his epistles. As author of almost half of the twenty-seven books of the New Testament, he has influenced Christianity as no other man with the exception of Jesus himself. Even after nearly two thousand years, St. Paul's candor, freshness, clarity, and perceptiveness in his writings are as welcome as sunrise.
Orthodox Christianity remembers St. Paul each year on 29th June and as one of the Apostles on June 30.

33X40 cm -12,9X16,1 inch.

+Saint Apostle Peter was the brother of the Apostle Andrew and came from Bethsaida of Galilea, where he lived with his family and he was a fisherman. As we learn from the Gospel, when Jesus went to the lake Gennisaret met the brothers Peter and Andrew, who threw their nets. When Jesus Christ called them, they left their nets and followed Him. The Apostle Peter, having preached the word of the Gospel, wrote two letters and then he was crucified in Rome.

Saint Apostle Paul was born in Tarsus of Cilicia. Staunch supporter of the Mosaic Law as he was, he had been a fierce persecutor of Christians. He even traveled to Damascus to pursue the Christians. He manifested Christ and commanded to go to Ananias, who baptized him. From that moment Paul became the greatest preacher of the Gospel throughout the world. Having taught the Truth in many pagan, came to Rome, where he become a martyr.
They never met, but we see them iconographied together because they both were the cornerstone, on which the foundation of the holy Church of Christ was built.

The Church celebrates their memory on 29 June.

Άγιος Λουκάς ο Iατρός- Saint Lucas the Doctor

+The Archbishop of St. Luke (Valentin-Voino Giasenetski), lived in the worst period of the modern European history, in a regime hostile to any religion and freedom. He lived and fought as a Doctor and as a simple citizen in 2 world wars and dozens of movements and revolutions.

The suffering, the prisons of Siberia and the polar cold would have killed him dozens of times. And only the fact of survival in such extreme conditions for months, should be attributed to a host of miraculous interventions.
The politics with the intrigues, would had him executed, and finally the Second World War and Stalin could someone expect that they would probably erase all that was left of him.
Saint Luke is a global phenomenon, fully registered. only few times in the Modern Christian history, divine forces make their presence visible to a human being and still protect him until natural death. In the case of St. Luke's survival and only is a top direct proof of relationship with the Divine.
The presence of sulfate constantly intervene and act in the life of Archbishop. The word 'constantly" here is refeared... for fifty years! For half a century, an angel of God surrounds him with an invisible veil and protect the doctor without knowing, he saves thousands of lives and sanctify in times of darkness.
For decades the sulfur is being strengthened and illuminated mentally and spiritually by God. He gives spiritual forces and medical capabilities far beyond what is normal, while protecting him from the daily challenges of the worst regimes ever seen the man.
The Lord, through St. Lukas blessed and elevated the science and research for the people, provided that it always remains connected to the Faith and Knowledge.
In those years someone could be arrested without trial if dared to make the cross. Thousands of monks were executed without a trial. Thousands of people were killed for no reason, just because the neighbor betrayed them to the Execution Committee.
Valentin Voino-Giasenetski, later Bishop Lucas, faced with a unique way dozens of top party officials of the regime to their varying pressure. He was persecuted, betrayed, imprisoned and exiled.
In times of extreme religious prohibition he did not ever hide the icon of the Virgin Mary from the surgical ward. When forced to do so, simply stopped surgering. He did it again only when the icon was put back on the wall.
Stalin who dared and sent to Siberia to die, heroes soldiers that had just defeated the Axis forces, he did accepted the "slap" that Bishop Lucas gave him in the name of faith and dignity. He abstained from the award (reaction unthinkable at those times) giving the amount of money of the prize to the poor.
For 55 years, he provoked with his faith and his words, the forces of evil and he defeated them at daily basis, showing anytime the majesty of Divine protection.
Saint Lukas clearly demonstrates that whoever God decide to protect, not suffering of wars neither exile in arctic temperatures, and neither even the prison to Siberia can bend him.
On June 11 every year, we celebrated the memory of Archbishop Luke of Crimea. After his death, numerous miracles and therapies recorded in the whole world.

Άγιος Ιωάννης ο Πρόδρομος- Saint John the Precursor

Egg tempera on a piece of pine wood. 20x15cm - 7,8x5,9inch.

+The saint, prophet and precursor Ioannis (John), constitutes landmark and simultaneously bridge between the Old and the New Testament. He was teaching and preparing the world to receive Him. It is considered as one of the biggest prophets. Even Christ himself, reported that no other person did stand higher than Ioannis. His clear words bothered the corrupted consciences of Pharisees and the king Herodes as well, which jailed him and in the end he decapitated him. Orthodox Church honors his memory six days of time: 7 January (feast to his price) 24 February (1st & 2nd finding of his Honest Head) 25 May (3rd finding of his Honest Head) 24 June (his birthday) 29 August (abrupt his Honest Head), and 23 September
