------------------------------------------

- Saint elder Iakovos Tsalikis was among the holiest Elders, who lived in Greece the past decades. His holiness is acknowledged by almost all Greeks and thousands of faithful from the rest world. His entire holy life and the miracles he worked and is still working today, place him among the biggest recent Saints of the Orthodox Christian Religion.

Fr. Iakovos Tsalikis was born in Livisi, Asia Minor on November 5, 1920.  He was one of nine children that his mother Theodora gave birth to.  His father Stavros was taken captive by the Turks in the catastrophe of Asia Minor, when the Greeks lost the war.  The father was later released and joined his family in Greece.  Because of the difficult times in which the Elder’s family lived only three of the nine children lived beyond infancy.

Young Iakovos lived through the upheaval of the Orthodox Christian population of Asia Minor in 1922. Initially the family settled in the village of Saint George in Amfissa, where the living conditions were appalling.  In fact, the conditions there were close to starvation.  In 1925, the family moved to Farakla in Northern Evia, Greece.  The Elder Iakovos was educated in the village Church School of Saint Paraskevi.  Young Iakovos expressed from a young age an inclination for monastic life.  He was known as the monk in the village because of his monastic practices of fasting and prayer. While still a young boy he had a visitation from Saint Paraskevi, who revealed to him in detail the religious life that he would follow in his life.

His fervor for the Church from a young boy was so profound that he learned by heart the whole text of the Divine Liturgy at age seven.  He became seriously ill at the age of fifteen but survived.  The Second World War broke out five years later.  His health was impaired again during the war and he lost his mother in 1942.  During the German occupation of Greece, he and many of his fellow villagers were taken prisoners by the Germans.  They were taken to the village Strofilia.  He and his fellow Greeks suffered terribly during the German occupation of Greece and later with the civil war that broke out with the communists.  He was drafted into the Greek army in 1947 and was discharged in 1949.  In 1949 his father passed on to eternal life.

The Elder’s sister got married in 1951. The same year elder Iakovos decided to enter the monastic life.  He chose to enter the Monastery of Saint David in Evia, which at that time had only three monks.  The conditions at the Monastery were very difficult at the beginning.  The Monastery had been almost abandoned and the monks that lived there did not do anything to improve the facilities.  Because of these difficulties that he encountered the Elder returned to Farakla for a while.  He returned to the Monastery again and was tonsured a monk on November 31, 1952.  The following month, he was ordained a deacon on the 17th of December in Halkida and two days later he was ordained a priest.  He was chosen to be the Abbot of the Monastery of Saint David in 1975.  But prior to this the Elder had become well known and beloved by the faithful in that part of Evia.  The faithful would visit the Monastery for the sacrament of confession and for pastoral counseling.  The number of faithful Christians visiting the Monastery increased drastically and the income of the community was increased dramatically to the point where many improvements were made to the Monastery.

The Elder Iakovos Tsalikis is a contemporary of the Elder Porphyrios.  Both men were miracle-workers. Elder Tsalikis died November 21, 1991 and the Elder Porphyrios died December 2, 1991. They have had a great spiritual impact upon the contemporary Orthodox Church. This impact has continued even more profoundly after their departure for eternity.

What is unusual in the life of Elder Tsalikis is his visible battles with demons that assailed him and how he was able to subdue them. Following his experience with these spirits of darkness, he then was given the grace to become a very effective exorcist.  He was able with the sanctified skull of St. David, the founder of his Monastery, to banish many demons from faithful people of the Church, who were possessed. It was early on in his monastic life that the demons would attack Fr. Iakovos physically to the point of knocking him out cold.  On the heels of these merciless attacks by the demons Fr. Iakovos was given the grace to banish demons from people.  The demonic method of attacking people is well known from Holy Scripture and in the history of the Church. They are able to inflict such demonic influence on human beings that they become blind followers of Satan.  It was especially during the 1980’s that possessed people were brought frequently to the Monastery for the prayers of exorcism.  Father Iakovos would read the prayers of exorcism over them and then bless them with the blessed skull of Saint David.  The Monastery was established by Saint David in 1550.  The relics of Saint David are very fragrant to this very day.

+ The word angel means "messenger" and this word expresses the nature of angelic service to the human race. Angels are also referred to as "bodiless Powers of Heaven". Angels are organized into several orders, or Angelic Choirs. The most influential of these classifications was that put forward by pseudo-Dionysius the Areopagite (not to be confused with Dionysius the Areopagite, who was baptized by Saint Paul and lived in the first century, and from whom pseudo-Dionysius took his name) in the fourth or fifth century in his book The Celestial Hierarchy.
In this work, the author interpolated several ambiguous passages from the New Testament, specifically Ephesians 6:12 and Colossians 1:16, to construct a schema of three Hierarchies, Spheres or Triads of angels, with each Hierarchy containing three Orders or Choirs. In descending order of power, these were:

  • First Hierarchy:
    • Seraphim
    • Cherubim
    • Thrones
  • Second Hierarchy:
    • Powers
    • Dominions
    • Principalities
  • Third Hierarchy:
    • Virtues
    • Archangels

O άγιος απόστολος Φίλιππος - Saint Philip the apostle

22x30cm / 8,6x11,8inch. Egg tempera and gold leaf 22k on halo.

+ The Holy and All-praised Apostle Philip, was a native of the city of Bethsaida in Galilee. He had a profound depth of knowledge of the Holy Scripture, and rightly discerning the meaning of the Old Testament prophecies, he awaited the coming of the Messiah. Through the call of the Savior (John 1:43), Philip followed Him. The Apostle Philip is spoken about several times in the Holy Gospel: he brought to Christ the Apostle Nathaniel (i.e. Bartholomew, April 22, June 30, and August 25. See John. 1:46). The Lord asks him where to buy bread for five thousand men (John. 6: 5-7). He brought certain of the Hellenized Jews wanting to see Jesus (John. 12:21-22); and finally, at the Last Supper he asked Christ to show them the Father (John. 14:8).
After the Ascension of the Lord, the Apostle Philip preached the Word of God in Galilee, accompanying his preaching with miracles. Thus, he restored to life a dead infant in the arms of its mother. From Galilee he went to Greece, and preached among the Jews that had settled there. Some of them reported the preaching of the Apostle to Jerusalem. In response, some scribes arrived in Greece from Jerusalem, with one of the Jewish chief priests at their head, to interrogate the Apostle Philip.
The Apostle Philip exposed the lie of the chief priest, who said that the disciples of Christ had stolen away and hidden the body of Christ. Philip told instead how the Pharisees had bribed the soldiers on watch, to deliberately spread this rumor. When the Jewish chief priest and his companions began to insult the Lord and lunged at the Apostle Philip, they suddenly were struck blind. By his prayer the Apostle restored everyone’s sight. Seeing this miracle, many believed in Christ. The Apostle Philip provided a bishop for them, by the name of Narcissus (one of the Seventy Apostles, January 4).
From Greece the Apostle Philip went to Parthia, and then to the city of Azotus, where he healed an eye affliction of the daughter of a local resident named Nikoklides, who had received him into his home, and then baptized his whole family.
From Azotus the Apostle Philip set out to Syrian Hieropolis (there were several cities of this name) where, stirred up by the Pharisees, the Jews burned the house of Heros, who had taken in the Apostle Philip, and they wanted to kill the apostle. The apostle performed several miracles: the healing of the hand of the city official Aristarchus, withered when he attempted to strike the apostle; and restoring a dead child to life. When they saw these marvels, they repented and many accepted holy Baptism. After making Heros the bishop at Hieropolis, the Apostle Philip went on to Syria, Asia Minor, Lydia, Emessa, and everywhere preaching the Gospel and undergoing sufferings. Both he and his sister Mariamne (February 17) were pelted with stones, locked up in prison, and thrown out of villages.
Then the Apostle Philip arrived in the city of Phrygian Hieropolis, where there were many pagan temples. There was also a pagan temple where people worshiped an enormous serpent as a god. The Apostle Philip by the power of prayer killed the serpent and healed many bitten by snakes.
Among those healed was the wife of the city prefect, Amphipatos. Having learned that his wife had accepted Christianity, the prefect Amphipatos gave orders to arrest Saint Philip, his sister, and the Apostle Bartholomew traveling with them. At the urging of the pagan priests of the temple of the serpent, Amphipatos ordered the holy Apostles Philip and Bartholomew to be crucified.
Suddenly, an earthquake struck, and it knocked down all those present at the place of judgment. Hanging upon the cross by the pagan temple of the serpent, the Apostle Philip prayed for those who had crucified him, asking God to save them from the ravages of the earthquake. Seeing this happen, the people believed in Christ and began to demand that the apostles be taken down from the crosses. The Apostle Bartholomew was still alive when he was taken down, and he baptized all those believing and established a bishop for them.
But the Apostle Philip, through whose prayers everyone remained alive, except for Amphipatos and the pagan priests, died on the cross.
Mariamne his sister buried his body, and went with the Apostle Bartholomew to preach in Armenia, where the Apostle Bartholomew was crucified (June 11); Mariamne herself then preached until her own death at Lykaonia.
The holy Apostle Philip is not to be confused with Saint Philip the Deacon (October 11), one of the Seventy.

 Troparion (Tone 3)
Holy Apostle Philip,
entreat the merciful God
to grant our souls forgiveness of transgressions.

Σύναξις των Αρχαγγέλων Μιχαήλ και Γαβριήλ - Synaxis of the Archangel Michael and Gabriel

45x60cm / 17,7x23,6inch (each). Egg tempera

Τη σχέση, τώρα, που έχουν οι άγγελοι με το Θεό και τους ανθρώπους, καθώς και την αποστολή τους, βλέπουμε επίσης μέσα στην Αγία Γραφή. Και ιδιαίτερα, στους Ψαλμούς 33, στίχ. 8 και 90, στίχ. 10-12, στη δε Καινή Διαθήκη, Ματθ. ιη' στίχ. 10, καθώς επίσης και στην προς Εβραίους επιστολή, κεφ. α' στίχ. 14, όπου ο συγγραφέας αναφωνεί: «οὐχὶ πάντες εἰσὶ λειτουργικὰ πνεύματα εἰς διακονίαν ἀποστελλόμενα διὰ τοὺς μέλλοντας κληρονομεῖν σωτηρίαν;». Δηλαδή, δεν είναι όλοι οι άγγελοι πνεύματα υπηρετικά, τα όποια ενεργούν όχι από δική τους πρωτοβουλία, αλλά αποστέλλονται από το Θεό για να υπηρετήσουν εκείνους που μέλλουν να κληρονομήσουν την αιώνια ζωή;

+ All the Angels, according to the Apostle Paul, are ministering spirits, - sent forth to minister to them who shall be heirs of salvation - (Heb. 1:14). God set them as overseers of every nation and people, and guides to that which is profitable (Deut. 32:8); and while one Angel is appointed to oversee each nation as a whole, one is also appointed to protect each Christian individually. He commands them to guard them that hope on Him, that nothing should harm them, neither should any evil draw nigh to their dwelling (Ps. 90:10-12). In the Heavens they always behold the face of God, sending up to Him the thrice-holy hymn and interceding with Him in our behalf, seeing they rejoice over one sinner that repents (Esaias 6:2-3; Matt. 18:10; Luke 15:7). In a word, they have served God in so many ways for our benefit, that the pages of Holy Scripture are filled with the histories thereof. It is for these reasons that the Orthodox Catholic Church, wisely honouring these divine ministers, our protectors and guardians, celebrates today the present Synaxis that is, our coming together in assembly for their common feast to chant their praises, especially for the Archangels Michael and Gabriel, who are mentioned in the Scriptures by name. The name Michael means "Who is like God?" and Gabriel means "God is mighty." The number of Angels is not defined in the divine Scriptures, where Daniel says that thousands of thousands ministered before Him, and ten thousands of ten thousands attended upon Him -(Dan. 7:10). But all of them are divided into nine orders which are called Thrones, Cherubim, Seraphim, Dominions, Powers, Authorities, Principalities, Archangels, and Angels.

Apolytikion of Synaxis of the Archangels in the Fourth Tone
O Commanders of the Heavenly Host, we the unworthy beseech you, that through your entreaties you will fortify us, guarding us in the shelter of the wings of your ethereal glory, even as we fervently bow before you crying: "Deliver us from all danger, as Commanders of the Powers on high! "

Τα Εισόδια της Παναγίας - The Presentation of the Virgin Mary

                                                30X40 cm   -   11,8X15,7 inch.

The Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary

The Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary is a feast celebrated by both the Catholic and the Orthodox Churches.
It is the celebration of a presumed event of which there is no strict historical record – namely, that Mary, as a child, was presented to God by her parents. There is no mention of this event anywhere in the New Testament.
But it appears, for instance, in an apocryphal work called the Infancy Narrative of James.
According to this story, Mary’s parents, Joachim and Anne, who had been without children, received a heavenly message that they would bear a child. When a girl was born, the parents went in thanksgiving to the Temple in Jerusalem to consecrate her to God. The story then says that Mary remained in the Temple until she reached puberty and then she entrusted to Joseph who was to be her guardian.
Other versions of the story from works such as the Gospel of Pseudo-Matthew and the Gospel of the Nativity of Mary say that Mary was brought to the Temple about the age of 3 in fulfilment of a vow by her parents. And she was to remain there to be prepared for her future role as the Mother of God.
The celebration of the feast began with the dedication of the Basilica of Saint Mary the New, which was constructed in 543 near where the Temple had been in Jerusalem. This basilica was later destroyed but the feast had now spread all through the Eastern church. In the West, it was first adopted in 1373 by the papal chapel in Avignon (the city in the south of France where the papacy spent several years in exile). However, it was removed as a Church feast by Pope Pius V from the revised Roman Calendar in 1568 but restored again in 1585 by Pope Sixtus VI.
Western art usually focuses on the figure of the little girl Mary climbing the steps of the Temple, having left her parents at the bottom, and approaching the Chief Priest and other Temple figures at the top of the steps. The Presentation was one of the traditional scenes illustrating the Life of the Virgin.

Ἀγιος Απόστολος ο Νέος - The New-martyr saint Apostle

                                                    20X25 cm - 7.8X9.8 inch.

+ Martyred in Istanbul on August 16, 1686

The glorious martyr Apostolos came from St. Laurentios, a small and beautiful village in mountain Pilion, in Volos, Greece. At the age of 15 both his parents died and so he went to Istanbul, where he worked as a clerk in a pub. The saint, was already four whole years in Constantinople, when the residents of St. Laurentios, his homeland and the region,  had been hard oppressed by heavy taxation and unfair. They decided to appeal to the Commissioners of the Sultan, which provided those villages. They achieved a reduction of taxation but Voivod, not only did not recognize the letters of trustees and dismissed as false, but also he arrested the three residents that had gone to Constantinople, he took them to the City and acted put them to jail as a last resort betrayal.. Voivod ordered tortured them hard to death. The saint one day managed to free one leg and tried to escape. But from the noise of the chains they arrested him again. Voivod then came and started hitting him with an axe.  The saint bravely resisted saying: I am a Christian and I wont ever deny my holy Faith. They tortured him and then they shut him down with the criminals in a jail. Then they led him to the highest religious leader of Muslims and other officials who began with flattery and promises for wealth and prices to Islamisate him. Because the saint remained firm in his faith led him to another chief, who has tried to take the control to change his religion with even greater promises. Apostolos just said that they loose their time and that he was not afraid of any torture. Before the dawn they led him to the place of execution and they decapilated him. He was only nineteen.  They threw his body in the sea, and took his head to the their chief, as the evidence of execution. We don't   know where is his holy body but his head' s put in a silver bag and they send it to the church of St. Demetrios in Tatavla. Later Dositheos of Seleucia, who came from the same village with Apostolos, sent his holy head to his hometown, where the church was  rebuilt, after Saint's exhortation and advice.
The Orthodox Church celebrate his holy memory on 16 August and on 3 November the founding of his relics.

Άγιος Μηνάς- Saint Minas

                                                      21Χ32 cm - 12,5X 8,3 inch.

+ Saint Minas lived in the era of King Maximianos and descended from Egypt. His parents were pagans.
When he grew up, enrolled in the class of the military. He served in the royal troops, the "Numbers"(military orders) called Routalika, under the ruler Argyriskos in Kotyaeio of Phrygia.
At that time, the Brigadier Firmilianos gathered soldiers and the Barbaria - North Africa - to defend her from predators. Along with soldiers he took, was also Minas, nsingularised both for his bravery and for his wisdom.
Some day an order was given by the king for the soldiers to arrest Christians and torture them up so as to deny their Faith. Minas hated this disrespectful command and decided to leave from the military life, he went up to the mountain, where there was more than a refuge.
Preferred to live with the beasts in a cave rather than be with the enemies of Christ. There remained some time constantly cleaning himself with fasting, vigil and prayer. His heart filled with the desire of martyrdom. He beheaded on 11 November. His body and his head thrown in the fire. What was left from his relics, Christians got it and went to Egypt as it was the last request of Saint Minas.
